The PRODIGY at Trusts Stadium, Henderson by Robecca Leyden.
Have you become familiar with Keith Flint, Liam Howlett and Maxim Reality yet?
If not you should, because they are the current three band members of one of the biggest and most influential bands in the world.
Also known as The Prodigy.
The PRODIGY have visited the land of the long white cloud a fair few times over their colossal career. (Who could forget the most recent N.Z visit, where the boys proved to be the icing on the BIG DAY OUT 2009 cake?) Fast forward to March 2010 Trusts Stadium; where yet again they have shown why they have dominated the underground hard house scene since their 1992 debut album “Experience”.
“Does It Offend You, Yeah?” where an interesting choice to open with. They had a far more Indie/Pop/Acousmatic feel (genres that are more recently associated with the latest music to emerge from the underground). However, getting these bad boys to open was an EXELLENT choice, because they not only injected the audience with a bit of good old indie pop happiness (always a fantastic way to warm up an audience); but by having them open, they went to show that The Prodigy (now in the veteran stage of their career) are still in the know, and at the forefront of the latest sounds to emerge from the music scene.
So after an uplifting, electro opening, The Prodigy exploded onto the stage, with their 1997 hit “Breath” cementing why they were, after all, the main attraction. As one would predict this made the room erupt into a dance hall furry, thus foreshadowing the energised performance to follow.
Playing all the classics, like “Smack My Bitch Up” and “Firestarter “while also throwing in a few new roaring tracks such as “Thunder” from their latest album “Invaders Must Die”. With not one, but TWO fantastic encores, these boys from West London really know how to work the crowd. Speaking of working the crowd, they had amazing interaction, which created a wonderful room dynamic.
Not that they needed it, but the accompanying light show was spectacular! While Reds, blues and yellows pulsated, the three member’s silhouettes pranced around the stage, illuminated and radiating raw energy.
The only real setback of the evening was the complete lack of foresight by the Trusts Stadium to realise that only having hot water coming out of every tap, as well as a seemingly non ventilated room; equals a MAJOR overheating problem. I can honestly say that is one the hottest times I have ever spent at a gig and am surprised there weren’t people passing out!
This was an amazingly explosive performance, picture sweat dripping off every person in the room as the crowd pulsated as one to the heavy bass line. The Prodigy are most definitely the masters of mashing up genres and even going so far as steamrolling right through them to create their own unique sound!
If you happened to miss out, I highly recommend you grab yourself a ticket next time we are lucky enough to have these Brit boys visit!
